What is Nocturia in Men?

Hey guys, Jill here. I read an interesting article, which I have to admit made me want to fall out of my chair, because I could have sworn I was reading about a problem that affects a lot of women, not a lot of men, since I know tons of women, including myself, who have this common annoying habit.

The habit, or “issue” is called nocturia, and it’s simply the annoying urge to go pee a few times during the night, characterized as two times or more per night. I know myself, I usually can’t get through a night without waking up once to run to the toilet, but I drink a TON of water, and I drink it right up until I go to bed usually.

Not a habit that I know is conducive to good sleep patterns, but I’ve always been one of those people that seems constantly thirsty, and it’s good for you to drink lots of pure water – it helps cleanse the system and keep things moving.

But men who have nocturia, or frequent urination, may actually also have an underlying problem that can signify a fairly important health issue.

Prostate health is very vital to men, because prostate cancer becomes prevalent as a man gets older, and the prostate is one of the most likely organs in a male to become cancerous, so it’s important that he monitors the health of his prostate and is aware of any issues.

Frequent urination can be a sign of an enlarged prostate, and if men have nocturia, which is getting up to go to the bathroom and urinate at least twice a night, they really should see a doctor and get their prostate checked so that they can address any issues before they get out of control.

Nocturia can also be a sign of heart failure, or problems that can lead up to heart failure, and can be a sign of prostate cancer itself, so men, especially as you get older, it is very important to monitor your urination habits and not just chalk them up to “old age”.  It can be the difference between life and death for men who are truly having issues.
