Taking Aspirin For Heart Health? Think Again

Ever since the news came out several years ago that popping a daily aspirin may help men (and women) prevent heart attacks and strokes thanks to it capability to thin the blood out more, many people who are concerned with this or have a family history of heart attack or stroke have been taking them every day.

It actually has a similar effect to blood thinning drugs. However, aspirin can corrode the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers and other nasty side effects in men that are not so desirable.  It can cause internal bleeding as well, so it’s not clear whether the tradeoff is really worth it. Every time I hear internal bleeding or irritation of any sort, it makes me wonder whether it also may increase the risk of certain types of cancer.

Repeated irritation, bleeding or other trauma to any part of the body can increase the risk for cells to grow cancerous in that area. This is why some body care products and other products we eat have come under fire for being tissue irritants. As a comparison think of cigarette smoke. Smoke, when inhaled into the lungs, becomes a constant irritant to the lung tissue and can the result in cancerous cell growth that leads to full blown lung cancer.

The internal bleeding can be cause by long term aspirin use, which is definitely a concern for those taking it, and should be considered before taking something like this, seemingly inert medication, for long periods of time and on a daily basis.

Men who are doing this should only do so under the recommendation and supervision of a doctor and if any gastrointestinal problems arise, they should bring this to their doctor to be monitored.
