Finasteride Sexual Side Effects Last Longer than Thought
Finasteride, which is a common male hair loss drug that has been out and popular for several years now, most well known under the brand name Propecia, has been known to cause at least temporary sexual side effects in the men who take it to combat their male hair loss and male pattern baldness.
However, new research is suggesting that the sexual side effects such as premature ejaculation and impotence, may last a lot longer after the patient has ceased taking the medication.
The initial thought was that it may last several months after the medication was stopped, but now research is finding that the sexual effects are lasting in some men as long as five to ten years!
They are thinking that the male hair loss medication is causing some hormone switch to go off in the male brain, making it hard for the man to get erections, as well as lowering his natural libido, or desire to have sex.
This does make sense if you think about it, because male hair loss is usually due to an over abundance of androgens, of testosterone, and perhaps the finasteride drug helps lower those hormones, but its effects may be more lasting after the medication is stopped than once though.
This may leave men with undesirable side effects that affect their sex life and their self esteem long after the hair loss drug is stopped.
Impotence, lack of sex drive and premature ejaculation are all problems that can occur in men with low testosterone, but there are also pathways in the brain that can make this occur as well.
They are unsure of the exact mechanism now, but this finding may result in new extended warning labels on the drug, since now the drug says that the potential sexual side effects are reversible and temporary.
