“Dumb Jock” No Longer a Valid Label?
If you were ever labeled a “dumb jock” in high school, or even in college, because of your athletic prowess, well, then students who ribbed you with that label may just be eating their words now. According to a new study, students that were athletically more fit and able to perform physical tasks with more ease, actually scored higher than average test scores when given.
They found that on average, for each less minute a student could complete of a certain physical task, it seemed to correlate to about a percentage point less in their test scoring, meaning that the less physically fit and able they were, the less they scored on these tests, which makes the leap to say that students who are more physically fit on average will at least be better test takers, if not even have a slightly higher IQ.
Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule for things like this, like that some of the smartest people in the room may not necessarily be physically fit, but this was a study that was based on averages. I can tell you one thing, I can certainly tell a difference in my IQ when I stop working out.
Physical fitness helps me to focus, and it actually makes me FEEL SMARTER, so for me there is no doubt that staying in shape helps me perform critical thinking and focus tasks as well.
