With More Women as Breadwinners, Do Men’s Egos Suffer?

I’ve been reading a lot of interesting articles and perspectives on how the breadwinning abilities have slowly been turning over to women.  Not that guys aren’t often the breadwinners still in today’s typical family, but increasingly you are finding that women tend to bring home more bacon than the men do. It may be a trend, but it looks like it’s here to stay and it’s a trend that may keep edging toward women with the changing economic environment and the fact that working women are more of an accepted corporate addition since they are not discriminated against for executive positions (at least they should be, it’s law).

The accepted norm used to, back in the early 1900’s and before that, be that men would go out and earn the living for the family, and women would traditionally stay home and take care of the children and the house.  However, with the changing times and increased cost of living, it’s become increasingly difficult for only one head of the family to work.

As women got into the work force more, it was more and more normal for women to also pursue the higher eductional degrees and experience jobs that would allow them to get into high earning, bread winning positions, which places them many times ahead of their male counerparts whether it be their husband or their boyfriend.

Does this hurt the male ego?  Most guys say it is a little hard to swallow, but some are happy to hand over the reigns to their partners, content with the fact that they are able to either stay home with the kids or let their partners worry more about paying the mortgage and getting things paid for that need to be done or taken care of in a financial sense.  Guys have been able to slowly allow this to be ok in their minds, since many guys back in the day would have had a hard time with it.
