Step Up Your Workout, Work Out Less

Yeah, supposedly there are ways that you can actually step up the intensity of your workout, men, and end up spending less of your precious time in the gym, if you spend any time in the gym at all.  Couch potatoes, no need to even tune in for this one.  Lots of guys work out so that they do multiple reps in the gym, and they focus on only one body part at a time.  A well known fact amongst men that go to the gym, right?

Well, supposedly health experts and fitness guru extraordinaires are saying that reworking the time you spend in the gym and changing your routine up a bit can not only get you better results, but also faster results, which translates to less time in the gym for you guys who are body and health conscious.

So, how can you cut back on your gym time?

Well, supposedly if you use an approach where you gradually build up your intensity, whether weight lifting, or cardiovascular workouts, while then doing sudden, shorter bursts of more intense activity, will help you reduce your time in the gym.

This means that while you’re probably used to keeping the intensity higher for a long period of time while doing only short periods of your “warm up” time which is less intense by definition, this could actually be prolonging the time you need to workout while giving your the exact same results as the more targeted, slow alternating between short bursts of intensity and a shorter period of warmup.  Get it?

Likewise, on the treadmill or elliptical machine, vary your intensity.  Don’t just do high intensity for long periods of time, but instead keep varying the intensity in short bursts.  This is actually more efficient than long periods of high intensity as well.  So, if there are interval training settings on your piece of equipment, or one with hills or various amounts of intensity, go for that one instead.

Who knew that working too hard for too long could actually be detrimental to your efficiency when working out?  I certainly didn’t.  If you already knew this principle well then good for you!  If not, hope you learned something valuable!
