AIDS Group Suing Pfizer’s Viagra

An AIDS awareness and advocacy group is planning on suing the makers of the most popular male sexual enhancement drug on the market today, and definitely the most well known little blue pill, Viagra.  Why are they planning on suing the makers of Viagra?  Well, the groups claims that recent advertisements for the Viagra sexual enhancement drug contain images and suggestions that are powerfully suggestive of using the drug as a party drug and as a recreational drug, which is not any prescription drug’s intended purpose (although we all know many prescription drugs, both sexual and nonsexual, are abused this way).

The nonprofit organization which raises awareness and fights for research on AIDS treatments also alleges that the marketing of the popular sex drug as a recreational party drug has allowed for the further spread of AIDS through reckless sexual behavior and risky sex acts that may not be performed if someone has their head screwed on straight (eg without a head full of drugs or drug cocktails, as Viagra is used in on the party circuit apparently).

The reason the group is saying these ads target those more likely to take the drug to increase sexual response in conjunction with other popular street drugs is that it targets younger guys in the commercials, guys that could be in their twenties or early thirties, and the drug really is supposed to target older men who actually have an inability to sustain an erection or need help boosting their natural libido, not young guys who just want to use it for fun.

An example they used (which I’m not so sure I agree with, I think it may be a little over the top, but possibly not suggestive of recreational use as other commercials) is a spot where it suggests you use the drug on Superbowl Sunday, saying “be this Superbowl’s MVP” or something to that effect.  Thoughts anyone?
