First Successful Penis Transplant Performed
The first successful transplant of a human male penis was performed just weeks ago in a China hospital. It was performed not on a man who had an issue with genetics and a small penis or anything, it was that his penis severely injured in a traumatic accident, and was no longer able to urinate correctly or have sexual intercourse. The donor was a 22 year old brain dead man, who’s parents consented to having their son’s arguably most precious asset that he no longer had use for removed and donated.
While the surgery was generaly considered to be a success, the recipient of the penile transplant elected just a few weeks later to have the surgery reversed.
Doctors say the man and his wife had severe psychological issues with the new body part, and specifically the man’s wife had psychologically rejected it, while the man complained that he could not urinate after about ten days of having the new penis.
Doctors could however find no indication that the man’s body was rejecting the penile transplant. They nonetheless honored his wishes and removed it just a couple of weeks after they had added it. The success of this surgery gives doctors hope that this can be a successful surgery in the future, on the patients with the right psychological profiles and needs.
The surgery took hours of labor intensive surgery to make sure it would be fully functional when it was transplanted, so I’m sure the team of docs was disappointed the man was not happy with it! The good thing about advances like this is that it may even help with other surgeries for men who want to have larger penises or have penile deformities, such as penile enlargement surgery, which has quite a ways to go in the safety and functionality department.
