Experimental Male Contraceptives Inhibit Sperm

Currently the only forms of male contraception are a vasectomy and condoms, which both have their drawbacks. Well, this news will one day have every woman cheering that she may no longer have to take “the pill”, since “the pill” has side effects like moodiness, bloating, and weight gain. Scientists are working on a newer male contraceptive idea, where the product would actually inhibit sperm production.

Scientists have found it much easier to figure out ways to manipulate (control) a woman’s ovulation, than to control the production of sperm in men. Why? Because a woman only produces one egg a month while a man produces millions of sperm every day - talk about a challenge.

Not only that, but men remain fertile and can bear children long after a woman goes through menopause and becomes infertile and unable to have kids. Man, talk about a “sex machine”, every man’s body is virtually a robocop of procreation. Goes to show how much more powerful and overwhelming sexual energy is for men versus women. Hate to stereotype here, but it seems to be true!

One of the approaches for male sperm suppression is aimed at disabling the production of sperm, whether by hormonal or non-hormonal means. Another method being studied as a possible male birth control is to inhibit the actual fertilizing ability of the sperm, which is usually by disrupting a major and important step in the complex process of conception.

More to come on this fascinating area!
