Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health
Saw Palmetto is a natural plant (specifically in berry form), which is primarily grown in Florida, but also can be found in several other southern states where the climate is temperate and sun shines most of the year.
This herb has been used in Europe for years to treat men’s prostate problems, and has only fairly recently been used in the U.S. for the same, since the herbal and natural medicine phenomena has only recently caught on here.
Saw Palmetto contains compounds called phytosterols, which have been shown to slow and surb prostate cell growth, and thus help “shrink” it back to normal size.
Studies?
Unfortunately, solid studies on the benefits of Saw Palmetto, as with most other natural health supplements, is sparse. There have been roughly 18 clinical trials of saw palmetto, none of them exactly reliable. Only two used standardized doses of the herb.
Compared with a placebo, saw palmetto did improve urinary tract symptoms, including nighttime urination, by about 25%. Subjects taking saw palmetto were twice as likely to report improvements as those taking a placebo. It has been reported on the web also that in Germany, other studies have tended to support the effectiveness of saw palmetto
