Depression Meds Leading to Impotence?

There’s been a lot of bad press lately on depression medications.  The latest tibit against these risky pharmaceuticals is that most of them fail to treat about 50% of the patients who suffer from depression, anxiety and overwhelming feelings of sadness and isolation.  Scientists say that coming soon are a newer breed of antidepressants that should help improve these numbers, but I’m a skeptic.

Amongst the downsides and side effects of most antidepressants is that almost all of them have varying degrees of sexual side effects - including impotence in men and lack sexual desire in women.  Could the surge in antidepressants being prescribed be a bigger problem than we think in the increasing incidence of impotence, premature ejaculation and general sexual dysfunctions so prevalent in today’s western society?

I myself do think it has to take part of the blame, but believe there are much larger, more complex forces at work here too, such as the male psyche and the societal view of the importance of sex and sexual experiences, the rushing mentality of today’s American society and various other factors that play against the libido of both men and women.  Jeez, we wonder why the divorce rate is so high - we aren’t having good, old fashioned, tension releasing sex enough any more!
